 Violet's Story

Violet has waited over a year for us to have time to fix her home.  She has been mighty patient. Following Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, Violet began the rebuilding that her home needed.  She hired a contractor who gutted out her soggy house and began working to put her kitchen and living areas back in place.  Before he was finished, he left with her money and never came back.  Violet, who is one of our church members from the Bogalusa Seventh-day Adventist Church, has tried to make do with her unfinished house.  Her home is one of the projects that South Louisiana Rebuild is working on now.

The Kingboro Temple group of volunteers began her job by removing everything from inside the house.  There was no room to work and everything was put under a tarp outside as the group started on the basic sheet-rocking and repair that her walls needed.  Much of the bare wood was deteriorating and there were holes to the outside where the wind had taken bricks off the house and rain and critters had come in.    The New York volunteers built a wall to separate the living room from the bedroom.  Work was done on the bathroom; installing a new shower and sink.  The insulation and sheet rock was about 75 % hung.  But volunteers only have so much time—and Violet’s home still needs to have the sheet rock mudded, sanded and painted while the outside needs the siding hung.

If you would like to help finish this project—or others, contact Lavida Whitson, 501-317-0997, and bring your volunteer group to Hammond, LA where you can stay at the South Louisiana Seventh-day Adventist Convention Center.  We have a kitchen, bunk beds and air conditioning that will keep you comfortable while you work to help these people restore their lives and their dignity.  Many have waited in despair and squalor for a long time with no hope of help.  You can be God’s Hands in this world of darkness.

Thank you for your love and dedication.
